Do you worry about not having enough money saved to pay for an emergency? You’re not alone. In fact, 25 percent of Americans have nothing saved for an emergency or unexpected expense1, and 58 percent of adults have less than $1,000 in total available savings2.

Greater Nevada Credit Union, with a passion to help more people live greater, will soon introduce the I Can Save account. The account is designed to help qualifying* members start a basic savings plan and learn how to routinely contribute to their financial wellbeing. Here’s how it will work:

  1. Open your I Can Save account – online or in your local branch.
  2. Make a deposit into your I Can Save account each month – there is no minimum requirement, but there is a monthly maximum deposit.
  3. You’ll earn a special, generous rate while building your savings balance until it reaches $1,000. After that, you earn the current GNCU share savings account rate.
  4. If you withdraw funds from your I Can Save account for any reason, there is a two-year waiting period to open another one.

Credit unions and politics may seem like strange bedfellows; however for better or worse, they are very tightly linked. That’s why we at Greater Nevada invest significant time and energy advocating with federal, state and local legislators and regulators to ensure that the voice of the consumer and smaller businesses are heard when policymakers are contemplating decisions in areas like banking policy, privacy and data security.

Credit unions are creatures of legislation, as their existence came out of laws that were passed decades ago at the federal and state levels. Those laws need to be updated occasionally, and we need to be involved in that process to ensure our ability to serve you. In addition, there are differing opinions about what credit unions should be able to do and who they should be able to serve. Some parties (frequently the banking industry) would prefer that consumers and businesses have fewer choices for their banking services, so they relentlessly seek to limit the capabilities of your credit union.

Naturally, we at Greater Nevada think differently and believe as many people as possible should have access to the type of well-priced, high-quality financial services America’s credit unions have typically delivered. So we work hard to share that message with those in governmental positions of authority and oversight, and we work to back those candidates who have demonstrated they are credit union friendly, regardless of political party affiliation.

Beyond that, credit unions and other institutions must also comply with a long list of state and federal regulations as the world of providing financial services becomes increasingly more complex. This has become a tremendous challenge for community institutions to address. Yet we at Greater Nevada successfully continue to do so, while simultaneously working with government agencies to reduce onerous and costly impacts of their rules when they don’t make good sense.

Occasionally an issue may arise where we need to rely on our biggest advocacy resource—which is YOU! Experience has shown that credit union members can have significant impact when they share their voice to help persuade decision makers. We don’t ask for such participation often, but when we do it is always taken seriously by those individuals, as they realize credit union members who take the time to communicate with them are also very likely to take the time to vote!

Sometimes trying to work with legislators and other governmental officials can be challenging, and even frustrating. Yet we willingly do so because we believe there is a Greater good, which is ensuring your credit union retains the ability to serve you in the manner you desire and deserve. We view our investment in advocacy as an investment in you, the member/owners of Greater Nevada Credit Union.

Greater Communities

All year long, you can find Greater Nevada Credit Union (GNCU) making a difference in the communities we serve. Thanks to our employees who collectively volunteer thousands of hours annually, the organizations with which we partner, and the many others who support them. Following are just a few highlights of what we’ve accomplished so far in 2019.

  • Continued to help raise funds for the WOLF PACK MARCHING BAND at home basketball games, including providing fans who donated during the white out game a GNCU “I’m with the band” t-shirt.
  • Presented “BITE OF REALITY” financial education simulations at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Truckee Meadows, Dayton High School, Sierra Lutheran High School in Carson City, and Northern Nevada Council for the Social Studies’ Conference.
  • Raised funds for SPECIAL OLYMPICS NEVADA’S ANNUAL POLAR PLUNGE at Lake Tahoe to support our local athletes. Greater Nevada had more than 70 employee plungers and chickens participate.

Our Spanish Springs Branch is being remodeled, and soon members will enjoy an even greater experience with new service pods and interactive teller machines (ITMs). Meanwhile, the new full-service Fernley Branch is scheduled to open late summer. Bill capture enables you to take a picture of your paper bill with your smartphone and easily pay it through your eBranch online banking and mobile app.
