We’ve heard it before… “I like to receive paper statements so I can keep them in my file.” Or, “a paper bill reminds me to pay my bill.”
Most of us feel like we have more control if we can touch or physically see our documents in our hands. It is great to know that most people are organized and keep files of their important documents, but paper documents are not always the best solution.
Transitioning from paper to electronic notices has made a huge difference for me; especially when I look at my dining table and see less of a mess. Besides decluttering at home, eStatements, as well as electronic payments, have numerous benefits. The following outlines just how valuable these online services can be.
eStatements and electronic payments are protected when conducted through a financial institution’s secured online banking website. You don’t have to worry about your bank or billing information getting lost in the mail, delivered to a wrong address, or having someone take it from your mail box. You can sign on to your secured account and access your statement or make a payment from a computer, tablet or smart phone. I’m even learning that I can save the statement as an attachment and send it electronically to my tax preparer. I’m not only saving time; I’m no longer wasting paper, which helps me segue to my next topic.
Since regular statements and bills are made from paper, you’ll be saving a few trees and contributing to less waste if you simply access your statements or pay your bills online. On PayItGreen.org the website states that every year, “533 million pounds of paper [are] delivered to American households, according to the U.S. Postal Service. It requires an estimated 235 million gallons of fossil fuels to transport this much paper…” Imagine how much paper we could save and waste we could prevent, if more people signed up to receive their statements electronically and paid their bills online.
Availability and Convenience
Having immediate access to your documents is so important these days. As long as you have internet, you can log into your account for instant access to your bills, payments, and statements. And, when you set up billers online, you’ll have the convenience of being able to schedule a single payment on a given day or to schedule automatic payments to make your life that much easier.
