What is the difference between a debit card and a credit card?

plus sign icon

Debit cards draw on funds from your checking account. Credit cards draw from your approved amount of credit. Debit card transactions usually happen instantaneously and can be seen in your account activity, while credit card transactions go toward a balance you’ll pay down at a later date–usually the end of the month and with interest.

Is an ATM card a debit card?

plus sign icon

ATM cards and debit cards may sound similar, but there are a few key differences.
ATM cards are for withdrawing money out of an account from an ATM only.
Debit cards can be used to withdraw money from ATMs too. They’re more flexible, however, and can also be used to pay for purchases directly from the account.

Can I use my debit card at any ATM?

plus sign icon

In most cases, yes. That being said, you may be charged a fee if you withdraw funds at ATMs that are not included in the CO-OP Shared ATM network (which includes more than 30,000 ATMs throughout the country).

Are debit cards safe?

Debit cards, especially Visa debit cards, are very safe thanks to the Zero Liability Policy which covers you in the event that your card is lost, stolen, or used fraudulently.1 Plus, you can enjoy even more security by using the GNCU Cards app to take advantage of many different features to give you complete control over your GNCU Visa debit card.

Contactless GNCU Visa Debit Cards

Pay Your Way

Tap, insert, or swipe! With a contactless chip-enabled debit card, you can tap it against a reader, insert it using the EMV chip, or swipe it using the magnetic stripe at a payment terminal. Easy to use, flexible, and secure, your debit card allows you to pay however you want.

Making Contactless Payments

Make sure your debit card has this Contactless Symbol.  If so, it has a near-field communication (NFC) antenna allowing you to make contactless payments.

Look for the Contactless Symbol at the payment terminal. The terminal will tell you if you can tap, insert, or swipe your debit card. Some terminals will indicate where to tap, while others are less obvious.

Tap your debit card. Hold it near the terminal for about 1 – 2 seconds. You should hear a confirmation chirp or beep when your payment has been made.

Contactless Debit Card Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Here are a few FAQs regarding contactless debit cards.

What is a contactless debit card?

plus sign icon

A contactless debit card has a chip that uses a near-field communication (NFC) antenna to enable close-range payments. Your payment is processed when you tap your contactless debit card on a payment terminal that supports contactless payments.

How do I know if my GNCU Visa debit card is contactless?

plus sign icon

If you see the Contactless Symbol on the front of your debit card, then it can make contactless payments.

How do contactless payments work?

plus sign icon

Tap and hold your debit card to pay instead of inserting or swiping where you see the Contactless Symbol. Contactless payments are securely completed using short-range wireless technology between a contactless card or payment-enabled device.

How do I know where to tap my contactless debit card?

plus sign icon

The Contactless Symbol is usually on the payment terminal and shows you where to tap your debit card to make a contactless payment. On older terminals, the contactless reader may not be prominent.

Can I use my contactless debit card even if I don’t see the Contactless Symbol on the terminal?

plus sign icon

Yes. If you do not see the Contactless Symbol on the payment terminal, you can still pay by inserting the EMV chip or swiping the magnetic stripe.

What if I do not want to pay using contactless technology?

plus sign icon

You can always pay by inserting the EMV chip or swiping the magnetic stripe. However, the contactless feature cannot be disabled.

How long do I need to hold my contactless debit card to the payment terminal?

plus sign icon

You should hold it against the terminal for 1 – 2 seconds. A beep or chirp should confirm you have successfully made a purchase.

What if I walk by or brush up against a contactless payment terminal? Can I pay by accident or pay for another person’s purchase?

plus sign icon

No. Contactless debit cards must be very close or touch a terminal for 1 – 2 seconds to make a payment.

Will I be double charged if I tap my contactless debit card more than once when trying to pay?

plus sign icon

Payment terminals are designed to ensure the prevention of overpayment. Once you’ve presented your debit card to the terminal and the transaction has been completed, it’s not possible to pay again on that same transaction.

Can I use my contactless debit card outside of the U.S.?

plus sign icon

Yes. You can use your contactless GNCU Visa debit card wherever Visa is accepted worldwide. Many countries have adopted contactless payments, so be on the lookout for the Contactless Symbol on the payment terminal.

Are contactless debit cards safe?

plus sign icon

Yes. Contactless debit cards are safe because each transaction is accompanied by a one-time code that securely protects your payment information, similar to an EMV chip-enabled card.

Can my contactless debit card be hacked?
