Greater Nevada Credit Union Honors Educators with Greater Hearts of WCSD Awards

In a district filled with dedication, heart, and tireless service, a few individuals stood out for going the extra mile. The 2025 Greater Hearts of WCSD awards, a collaborative recognition program from Greater Nevada Credit Union and the Washoe County School District (WCSD), celebrated the remarkable efforts of educators and staff who make a profound difference in their schools and communities.
With more than 300 heartfelt nominations submitted this year, the Greater Hearts program continues to shine a spotlight on the extraordinary individuals who go above and beyond their roles to uplift students, support colleagues, and bring lasting positive change to their campuses.
This year’s honorees were celebrated in surprise school assemblies held throughout the day, where students, coworkers, and families gathered to show their appreciation.
Katey Bender – Special Education Administrator, AACT

Katey Bender’s influence can be felt in every corner of WCSD’s special education system. As a Special Education Administrator, Katey has built a reputation as a calm, confident leader with both the technical know-how and deep emotional intelligence required for her role. Whether navigating complex IEP cases or mentoring teachers through difficult days, Katey approaches every situation with integrity, empathy, and unmatched dedication.
Multiple nominations described Katey as a “compassionate leader,” “the best SEA I’ve ever worked with,” and someone who “strengthens teams and bridges gaps.” Her colleagues value her fast responses, level-headedness, and consistent support, while families appreciate how she ensures their voices are heard and their students are supported. WCSD is truly stronger, more inclusive, and more unified thanks to Katey’s leadership.
Matt MacKay – CTE Coordinator, AACT

From supporting teachers to empowering students, Matt MacKay’s leadership in WCSD’s CTE Department is grounded in empathy, foresight, and a relentless drive to serve others. Matt is known for going above and beyond every single day, always leading with his heart. He anticipates the needs of his department and consistently steps in to make things better—never for recognition, always for impact.
Matt’s unwavering support ensures that CTE educators and students alike are set up for success, fostering pathways that prepare learners for their futures. He’s a quiet force behind the scenes, helping shape the next generation of skilled professionals.
Jordan Hughes – School Counselor, Lincoln Park Elementary

Although Jordan Hughes only joined Lincoln Park Elementary this school year, his impact has been nothing short of transformative. As the school’s counselor, Jordan quickly became the heart of the community—energizing staff, inspiring students, and lifting everyone with his positivity and relentless enthusiasm.
His contributions go far beyond counseling. From teaching PE and leading student leadership groups to revitalizing the school’s garden for outdoor learning, Jordan jumps in wherever needed, always with a can-do spirit. As one nominator shared, “He helps create a school environment where everyone feels like they belong—like a true family.”
Jordan’s compassion, creativity, and tireless advocacy have not only enhanced student support services but have also helped build a more connected and caring school culture.
Arthur (Art) Pacheco – Math Teacher, Hug High School

Arthur Pacheco wears many hats at Hug High School—math teacher, sports coach, club advisor, and mentor to many. But perhaps his most impactful role is simply being someone students trust and respect. From challenging AP courses to basic mathematics, Arthur brings the same enthusiasm and dedication to every classroom and every student.
Whether supporting the Chess Club, leading Youth First Lunch Club, or opening his classroom to a wide variety of students at lunch—athletes, artists, and aspiring scholars alike—Arthur creates a space where all students feel seen, safe, and empowered. One nomination captured it best: “I don’t know many teachers that give as much as Arthur Pacheco.”
Arthur’s daily presence at Hug High exemplifies what it means to lead with heart, passion, and a deep belief in every student’s potential.
